Chapter 22

It was mid-afternoon. The police officers had left the hospital and the few family members, who had arrived to retrieve and comfort their children, were planning to return home as soon as the doctors said they were safe to travel.

The five survivors gathered in Jenna’s room. It was the first time they were together and alone since Chloe first escaped. They shared their experiences and most of their conversations with Officer Burgess, and Chloe told them about the threat she received in the middle of the night in the hospital.

She, apparently, wasn’t the only one.

Russ had also received an unexpected visit and a threat from the kidnapper they knew only as Jay. It was in the middle of the night, and he snuck into his room when the officer on guard wasn’t looking. With only a brief window available to him, he told Russ to let the others know they were watching and that they wouldn’t hesitate to harm them or their families if the police gained any more information.

Callie grew pale as she listened to Russ. They weren’t aware that she had just spoken with Wayne and revealed the names of the other victims and promised to testify against Jay and his partner when they were caught. Callie feared her bravado took her too far and she was just about to admit what she had said to Officer Burgess when she suddenly changed her mind.

She had survived this long on her own and she had no intention of relying on the other four for her safety and security. What she did on her own, was her business and she remained silent.

Then the five survivors looked at each other and made the same solemn vow. They wouldn’t say anything more.
